Un icone indigena

 

Mitjili cominciò la sua carriera di pittrice nel 1992 presso centro di Ikutji Womens Centre a Haasts Bluff.

Sia il fratello Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula che il marito Long Tom Tjapanangka, sono due artisti molto conosciti di arte indigena, ed hanno di certo influenzato lo stile personale di Mitjili, che è diventato un icona della pittura nella zona di Haasts Bluff.

Uno dei temi principali che Mitjili rappresenta nelle sue opere, è la terra d'origine del padre, cioè la zona di Uwalki, nel deserto di Gibson, caratterizzata da colline di sabbia rossa e cespugli. Molto diffusi sono inoltre gli alberi Watiya Tjuta che formano la base di numerosi suoi dipinti.

Probabilmente le opere di Mitjili sono le più esposte dalle gallerie e dai musei pubblici di tutta Australia, inoltre le sue opere sono state in numerose esposizioni internazionali, come Spirit Country, al Fine Arts Museum di San Francisco nel 1999.
