Here, Gracie tells the story of an initiation ceremony for women. Young sitting women are depicted here by the traditional horseshoe motif. Initiates are taught their role in nature and the reason why nurturing the land is so important. Gracie shows us here a sacred women's site near Utopia where women are painting the traditional patterns on their bodies in preparation for the ceremony.
Gracie's paintings have a lasting impression on all who set their eyes on her works. Her fine dot work is fine and her selection of colors is very well tuned. Her paintings can be minimalist yet highly elaborative at the same time. Although at first site her paintings may seem rather complex, there is a sense of simplicity about them which makes her such a distinguished artist. This painting is a large and fine example of just what a unique artists Gracie is.
