Some Wadjina went under the land,
they came to stay in the caves
and there we can see them.
Grown men listen to their Wadjina.
Long ago,
at another time,
these Wandjina changed the bad ones
into the rocks
and the springs
we always drink from.
These places hold our spirits,
these Ungur [eternal Dreaming] places of the Wandjina.
Sam Woolagoodja.
Unlike Rainbow Serpents, which are known throughout most of Aboriginal Australia, The Wandjina are unique to the Kimberley and therefore become synonymous with the whole region in the popular imagination. The Wandjina tradition and its expression in art are specific to the Worrorra, Ngarrinyin and Woonambal peoples who trace their own descent from the Wadjina spirit ancestors.
Lily specializes in representations of Wandjina executed in a refined style, full of subtle tonal variations. In this image the Wan djina is shown emerging from the veil of dots (rain) which also inundate the body. The dotted ground is also characteristic of Lily's depictions of totemic species and the the natural features of her country.
This work is accompanied with a photo of Lily with the painting and a certificate of authenticity is issued by Aboriginal Works that guarantees the authenticity of the painting.
