SEANNE PETERS

TITLE: Cod and Turtle dreaming

SIZE: 60cm X 60cm (17.7" X 23.6")

MEDIUM: Natural earth pigments on canvas

YEAR PRODUCED: 2007

PROVENANCE: Warmun Arts - Aboriginal owned and operated Art Centre.

When Seannes' grandmothers past away, the artist inherited several dreaming stories which are connected with the lands in which her family inhabited.

The artist here is showing us the landscape which surrounds the traditional lands in which the artists grandmother Eileen Bray was an inhabitant.1 This is the Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) area of the rock cod and turtle – the latter being a much loved subject by the artists of the Warmun community. The Dreaming story tells us that the rock cod had jumped through a hill, leaving a gap that can still be seen by visitors today. The gap here is represented by the white mark that disrupts the horizontal composition and the turtles head can be seen at the bottom left hand corner of the painting.
