ROSELLA NAMOK
TITLE: Early Rain
SIZE: 66cm X 55cm
MEDIUM: acrylic on canvas
Water is a major theme in Namok's acrylic paintings. Waves from the sea are transformed into sensuous compositions that create a sense of placid movement. Other works, such as “early rain” depict the rain as it falls before dawn. Water is here evoked, also by the seas surface which reflects the three clouds in the upper part of the composition.
Namok's technique involves the removal of the thick, top layer of paint while it's still wet. At times, the artist uses stamps to create her geometric designs. This process leaves two distinct levels giving depth to her images.
“I paint about the country and people around me, the weather, about traditional culture, about things that happen, in our isolated Community”1
