PANSY NAPANGARTI
TITLE: Two women dreaming (Kungka Kutjarra)
SIZE: 121cm X 124cm
MEDIUM: synthetic polymer paint on canvas
PROVENANCE: Leonard Joel's, Melbourne
Through a highly decorative surface, this painting represents a female Corroborree. From one generation to another, Luritja-speaking women have gathered at Illpili to engage in this age old ceremony. Through song, dance, body decoration and sand painting, they relive the traditions of their ancestors. The women in this painting are present in the form of 'U' shapes and through the depiction of their decorated belts, which are illustrated as the wavy lines. While the idea of the body paint is also expressed in the work's concentric circles, that same iconography marks the sand paintings which the women 'dust away' when the ceremony comes to an end.1
