LILLY KELLY NAPANGARDI

TITLE: Tali (Sand hills)

SIZE: 122cm X 150cm

MEDIUM: synthetic polymer paint on canvas

YEAR: 2008

Over the last decade, Lily has been exploring the area surrounding Haasts Bluff and Mt. Liebig with particular attention paid to the sand hills and their seasonal changes. The knowledge handed down to Lily concerning the territory has permitted the artist to interpret with conviction in her works the local topographical and meteorological changes, which effect daily life in the desert. After the rainfalls, the land is marked and leaves a pattern of lines and striations down the surface of the sand hills. This phenomena is here depicted in its microscopic detail, yet placed in a macroscopic context. So what we're seeing are the vast sand hills – yet the composition is formed by its most basic element – the single grains of sand.
