New Generation Papunya Tula Artist
Lorna was born in 1961 and is the daughter of Timmy Payungka Tjapangati, one of the original shareholders of Papunya Tula Artists. She is a second generation of the Papunya Artists and began painting at Kiwirrkura in 1996. In 1999 Lorna contributed to the Kiwirrkura women's painting as part of the Western Desert Dialysis Appeal. She and her husband Billy Ward, a well known Aboriginal artist in his own right, move between the communities at Kintore and Kiwirrkura, spending more time at the latter. She has been exhibiting her work since 2000 with solo shows in 2001 and 2004, and had her work entered into the 2002 Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award. Her work has been exhibited extensively in over 30 exhibitions across Australia, Switzerland and the UK. Line and dot work mixed together create a balance between the solid and the void. Her fine and rhythmic work evokes styles as diverse as the severe Western Desert formalism of Anatjari Tjakamarra, the grid patterns of the Tiwi islands and semi-geometrical Art Deco motifs. The work offered below comes from the Papunya Tula Artists - the most recognised Aboriginal Artists body in Australia. Click on the image below to find out more.
Her work is represented in major collections including: National Gallery of Australia Artbank The Aboriginal Art Museum of the Netherlands Art Gallery of New South Wales.
