GABRIELLA POSSUM NUNGURRAYI BORN: 1967 AREA: MT. ALLEN, WESTERN DESERT LANGUAGE: ANMATYERRE LURITJA
A Family Tradition We are proud to host paintings by one of the most celebrated contemporary Aboriginal female artists, Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi. The highly gifted artist, is the daughter of the late Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, without doubt one of the greatest aboriginal artist's that ever lived. Geoffrey Bardon came to Papunya in the early 1970s and encouraged the Aboriginal people to put their dreaming stories on canvas, stories which had previously been depicted ephemerally on the ground. Clifford Possum emerged as one of the leaders in this school of painting, which has come to be called Papunya Tula. Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri died in Alice Springs on the day he was scheduled to receive a medal praising his contribution to art and to the Indigenous community and awarding him the Order of Australia. Gabriella started painting alongside her iconic father at a young age. His influences are to be found in her work, yet she has created a style of her own. Her paintings are vivid in colors and bold in composition. Her "dot" work is central to her paintings, although Gabriella uses many different techniques to achieve the desired effect. Her works are highly collectable and without a doubt very decorative. Gabriella has exhibited all over Australia, in New York, London, Bern and many other cities world wide and has always found a grand reception.
