MINIMAL
For the greater part of the 20th Century, it was very difficult for an aboriginal to find permanent work, remembering that it was not until 1953 that the artist Albert Namatjira (1902 - 1959) was the first Indigenous person of the new continent to receive its citizenship. The one job that was in abundance for the men of desert tribes was that of stockmen. Among other tasks, the men would take care of the livestock in rural farms also know as Stations. Over the last decade, Tommy has been painting in the area around Doon Doon – where he was born and the place he worked for several years as a stockman. His artwork owes much to the tradition of the fathers of Kimberley art, yet has demonstrated in recent years an ever more personal 'minimal' tone with broad bands of red ochre and carbon black with little if any shading. The artist’s works are among recent acquisitions in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Australia and Parliament House.
