A Leader of the Next Generation

Josie Kemarre was born around 1945, and before starting to paint in the nineties, she had a job at Santa Teresa as a cook, and practiced intermittently as a translator. She later moved with her husband to Mt. Swan in Utopia. Similar to many indigenous people of Australia, she has lived a partially traditional life, gathering the naturally growing food from the land. After the death of the 'legendary' artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye in 1996, there were high expectations towards other emerging Utopian artists and thus immersed the 'spirit' of free and strong expressionism from Josie.
