INNOVATION IN THE DESERT
Sister of Tjunkiya Napaltjarri, Wintjiya was born in Malparingya and before moving to Kintore where she now lives, she spent some time at Haasts Bluff. She participated in the 1994 Kintore/Haasts Bluff joint project which was the beginning of her career, although Tjunkiya now paints solely for Papunya Tula.1 It is not uncommon to find works in which the two sisters have collaborated.2 Since the mid nineties, works by Wintjiya have been included in over thirty group exhibitions, including the major Papunya Tula 'Genesis and Genius' in 2000, organized by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. 1Also known as the Minyma Tjukurrpa Project, it comprised of a series of workshops designed to support womens painting. In 1995, the project was completed when the works were exhibited together in an exhibition at Tandanya, Adelaide – This was Tjunkiyas' first group exhibition. 2An example of such a work is illustrated in Spirit Country, by Isaacs, J. pp.56-57
