THE LIMITS OF OPTICAL EFFECTS
Ray James Tjangala is the son of Anatjari Tjampitjinpa (1927-1999), one of the founding members of Papunya Tula Artists co-operative. In 1963 his family moved from the desert to the Papunya community. It has been noted that Tjangala's friendship with the elder Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi (1924-1998) has had influences on the younger artist’s work.1 His bi-colour paintings create illusionary effects similar to the paintings by the English artist Ginger Riley, who plays with the optical possibilities of lines and curves created on a bi-dimensional surface. 1Art Gallery of NSW – acquisitions 2000: www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/collection
