A LONE STAR AMONGST THE MEN
Napangarti was born at Haasts Bluff and as a teenager she moved to Papunya, where she had the opportunity to observe older masters, such as Johnny Warangkula Tjupurrula (1925 - 2001) and Kaapa Tjampitjinpa (1920 - 1989). This atmosphere had a strong influence as she formed her personal style. During the 1970s she produced artifacts for 'Papunya Tula Artists' under the male pseudonym 'Panyma', as the co-operative was unable to support women painters at the time.1 This was only possible in 1983, when she was finally taken on as a Papunya Tula artist. Napangarti rapidly emerged as one of its foremost painters, recognized for her refined and innovative use of colour. She is custodian of several 'Tjukurrpas' including Seven Sisters, Hail, Desert Raisin and Two Women (Kungka Kutjarra). In 1989, Pansy won the National Aboriginal Art Award and in 1993 the Northern Territory Award. 1National Museum of Australia, Canberra.
