REFLECTIONS OF A CULTURE

Lin Onus grew up in Victoria and worked as a motor mechanic, helping out his father. In 1974, he began painting landscapes using the photo-realist style that became his trademark. A self-taught painter, sculptor, installer, and printmaker, he had his first show in 1975, and then exhibited regularly until his premature death at the age of forty-seven. Onus was one of the pioneers of the urban movement of Aboriginal artists. Pivotal to Onus’s artistic development were his numerous visits to Gamardi outstation near Maningrida in Arnhem Land where he worked with indigenous artists and was given the authority, by clan leaders to incorporate 'rarrk' traditional imagery and cross-hatching into his landscapes. In 1993, he was made a member of the Order of Australia for his services to the arts and for his promotion of other Aboriginal artists. His work is represented in all the State gallery collections and the National Gallery in Canberra. In 2000 the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney hosted a major retrospective exhibition, urban dingo: the art and life of Lin Onus. 1
