COLOURIST BY NATURE

Tjungurrayi was born around 1949 in Haasts Bluff and enjoyed a thriving artistic career until his death in 1998. From a young age his parents would teach him the 'Tjukurrpa's' connected to his homeland. His canvases often depict his totems: the snake, blue tonged lizard and 'maku' (the witchetty grub). Tjungurrayi's paintings are distinguished for their fine finished surfaces and abundant use of both figurative and symbolical motifs. A natural colorist, his works often have a multicoloured ground thus giving a particular vibrancy to figurative elements which populate the foreground.
