Michael Pambuk was born in 1916 and is an Arnhem Land artist who paints works on bark using natural earth pigments (ochres). The barks are striped from the trees between November and March (the wet season) once the sap has run down the tree - this makes the job of stripping the bark a whole lot easier. In the west and central areas of Arnhem Land, the 'X-ray' style of painting is the most common characteristic that distinguishes these artists from the rest of the contemporary art movements. However, Michael Pambuk is mixing traditional materials and supports with the more modern pointillist style. This work is highly rhythmic and the sense of movement is evoked throughout the whole work. The design for the work was used for the cover of the catalogue in which the painting was featured.
